Ground Motion Parameters user guide

TIP

Application for calculating ground motion parameters, including the peak of ground motion, Arias intensity and duration. The results are saved as a Ground Motion Catalog.
To obtain more general information about working with applications within the Platform, see Applications Quick Start Guide.

Step by Step

  1. This application uses seed or miniseed files (uploaded from the episode data or imported from the episode catalog available in the workspace) as input, to process signal. The User may select from 'Actions', 'Use in Application' and then 'Signal Parameters' (Figure 1). Then the screen shown in Figure 2 appears and the User just clicks on the button 'RUN' to execute the parameterize.

  1. The outputs (Figure 2) are created soon and are available for downloading. Alternatively, another SEED or miniSEED file can be used in the application by clicking 'Change File' tab and selecting an appropriate SEED or miniSEED file from the workspace. In case of miniSEED file Network inventory is required as input file (station additional information as station name, latitude, longitude and elevation which are required in GM Catalog).

The result is written to GM Catalog named similarly to the input file. The result next can be marge with other GM Catalog or converted to GM Parameter Catalog by joining with appropriate Catalog.

Options of the application
Event ID - fill in Event ID of parameterized waveform. Event ID is in Episode Catalog - that information allowed to prepare GM Parameters Catalog by joining GM Catalog results with appropriate Catalog.Amplitude parameters:Peak Ground Acceleration/Velocity/Displacement- Absolute maximum value of every waveform traces depend on waveform type → accordingly acceleration, velocity or displacement. Application recognize type of waveform based on Data type (MiniSeed in acceleration, velocity or displacement unit) or by information contained in inventory in case of miniSeed or Seed file (counts). Additional options can by used:- Horizontal component - Mark to calculates horizontal component of peak ground motion for every station contain in waveform.
- Merge method - Choose merging method*.
- Total component - Mark to calculate total component of peak ground motion for every station contain in waveform.
- Average Root Mean Square - Mark to calculates RMS of peak ground motion component for every station contain in waveform.Arias Intensity - Mark to calculate AI according (Arias, 1970, Bommer and Martinez-Pereira, 1999):
*where g represents gravitational acceleration and T denotes the end of record. The Arias intensity, which determines the intensity of events, scales quite well with the potential of an earthquake to trigger landslides. Only in case of acceleration data (instrument response must be removed)Horizontal component - Mark to calculate horizontal component (merged according complex method) of Arias Intensity for every station contain in waveform.Normalized Energy Density - Mark to calculate NED. Only in case of velocity data (instrument response must be removed).Horizontal component - Mark to calculate horizontal component (merged according complex method) of Normalized Energy Density for every station contain in waveform.Time duration: Time duration is calculated according method presented by  Snaebjornsson and Sigbjornsson, 2008 (Document Repository)
Absolute bracketed duration is calculated for every station component (traces) as the length of the time interval between the first and last occurrence of a ground motion exceeding a fixed threshold value. Can be calculated only when instrument response is removed (data has physical units). Horizontal component - Mark to calculate horizontal component (merged according complex method) of Absolute bracketed duration for every station contain in waveform.Relative bracketed duration is calculated for every station component (traces) as the length of the time interval between the first and last time the ground motion exceeds a threshold value defined as a fraction of the peak ground motion. Can be calculated with counts data or when instrument response is removed (data has physical units). Horizontal component - Mark to calculate horizontal component (merged according complex method) of Relative bracketed duration of horizontal component for every station contain in waveform.Absolute uniform duration is calculated for every station component (traces) as the length of time for which the ground motion exceeds a fixed threshold value. Can be calculated only when instrument response is removed (data has physical units).Horizontal component - Mark to calculate horizontal component (merged according complex method) of Absolute uniform duration for every station contain in waveform.Relative uniform duration is calculated for every station component (traces) as the total length of time for which the ground acceleration exceeds a threshold value given as a fraction of the peak ground acceleration. Can be calculated with counts data or when instrument response is removed (data has physical units). Horizontal component - Mark to calculate horizontal component (merged according complex method) of Relative bracketed duration for every station contain in waveform.Absolute effective duration is calculated for every station component (traces) as the length of the time interval between the two time points when the Arias intensity exceeds two separate fixed threshold values. Can be calculated only when instrument response is removed (data has physical units) and only for acceleration ground motions. Horizontal component - Mark to calculate horizontal component (merged according complex method) of Relative bracketed duration for every station contain in waveform.Relative effective duration is defined as the length of the time interval between when the normalised Arias intensity exceeds two separate fixed threshold values. Can be calculated with counts data or when instrument response is removed (data has physical units), but only for acceleration ground motions.Horizontal component - Mark to calculates horizontal component (merged according complex method) of Relative bracketed duration for every station contain in waveform.
