It is often assumed that unconventional exploration and extraction automatically brings prosperity for local, national and regional economies. In this paper, we argue that shale gas development requires a contextualized understanding of regional issues. We are also trying to identify the opportunities and the risks of shale gas development in Eastern Europe (referring to Romania’s case) and offer a cost-benefit analysis model that may be of interest to any policymakers and investors. date: 2015 date_type: published publication: Sustainability volume: 7 number: 3 publisher: MDPI AG pagerange: 2473-2489 id_number: 10.3390/su7032473 issn: 2071-1050 official_url: http://www.mdpi.com/journal/sustainability access_IS-EPOS: limited owner: Publisher citation: Muresan, Jianu Daniel and Ivan, Mihail Vincentiu (2015) Controversies Regarding Costs, Uncertainties and Benefits Specific to Shale Gas Development.
