"Geodynamics Limited is developing a geothermal field in\r\nunusual geological conditions using the principles of\r\nstimulation and circulation currently advocated for\r\nEnhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). A granitic body of\r\nabout 1000 km2\r\n is located beneath sedimentary rocks 3.5 to\r\n4 km thick. High heat flow and high temperature gradients\r\nin the sedimentary rocks have long been established over\r\nthe granite. The granite is elongated meridionally and is\r\nabout 50 km by 20 km. To date three areas within the\r\ncentral part of the granite have been explored each about\r\n10km apart. These three areas have been named the\r\nHabanero, Jolokia and Savina geothermal developments.\r\nEach of the developments is characterised by the presence\r\nof natural fractures within the granite with high fluid\r\noverpressures manifesting in the five wells drilled so far at\r\nsurface with a value around 34 MPa. The cause, extent and\r\nsignificance of this regionally extensive overpressure will\r\nbe discussed. The fracture networks discovered and\r\nenhanced by stimulation will be described and a general\r\ncrustal model of fracture development proposed.\r\nThe overall aim is to build geothermal power stations as\r\nmodules spread throughout the area with one station every\r\n4 km2\r\n. Each power station will likely be based on nine\r\nwells, 5 production wells and 4 injection wells, with a\r\ndown-hole well spacing of about 1 km. The wells for each\r\nmodule could be drilled from the one drill pad located\r\nbeside the power station. The potential to build several\r\nhundred power stations of this module size exists, however\r\nan initial commercial project is expected to provide around\r\n50 MWe net based on projected flow rates of 70-100 kg/sec\r\nand wellhead temperatures of 240-270ÂșC at each production\r\nwell. At full development this would amount to around\r\n12,500 MWe potential for the granite with extraction of\r\nstored heat down to a depth of 5 km."^^ . "2010-04" . "2010" . .
