Small events began immediately after the passage of the mainshock surface waves suggesting that the transient stresses of the seismic waves were the trigger. The increase in cataloged earthquakes in ordinary continental crust is a new observation and is statistically significant at the 95% level. Unlike the previous example of distant triggering during the Landers earthquake, the activated seismicity occurred entirely in non-volcanic areas. The Greek sites were triggered by waves with amplitudes at least a factor of 3 lower than the observed triggering threshold for Imperial Valley. We speculate that dynamic triggering on a regional-scale results in countrywide episodes of increased seismicity, or “superswarms”, in regions with low triggering thresholds such as Greece. date: 2000-09-01 date_type: published publication: Geophysical Research Letters volume: 27 number: 17 publisher: American Geophysical Union pagerange: 2741-2744 id_number: doi:10.1029/2000GL011534 refereed: TRUE issn: 0094-8276 official_url: http://dx.doi.org/10.1029/2000GL011534 access_IS-EPOS: limited owner: Publisher citation: Brodsky, Emily E. and Karakostas, Vassilios G. and Kanamori, Hiroo (2000) A new observation of dynamically triggered regional seismicity: Earthquakes in Greece following the August 1999 Izmit, Turkey earthquake.
