Abstract

The paper presents the preliminary results of observation of rapid changes in the Earth's gravitational field recorded during the rock mass short-term movements, induced by the underground exploitation of coal in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB) in Poland. Changes in the gravitational field were recorded by two gPhoneX tidal gravimeters installed in two regions of the Basin. One of the gravimeters is located in the area of operating mine in the southern part of the USCB. The foci of the tremors caused by a long wall exploitation of coal seams are located at distances from 1 to 3 km from the gravimetric station, i.e. in the near field of seismic events. The second gravimeter is installed in the northern part of the USCB, in the post-mining area. The foci of the mining tremors recorded by this instrument are located at distances from 6 to 52 km, in the area of distant active coal mines and thus in the far field of seismic events. The aim of the paper is the analysis of the data set of gravi-seismic events identified as mining tremors which were recorded by tidal gravimeters over a several months period (1th Nov. 2018 - 5th Jun 2019) with regards to their usefulness for the study of mining induced rock mass movements. Therefore the purpose of gravity observation system is to enrich information about very low frequency range of rock mass motions which are reported as co-seismic events in time dependent data provided by space and land observation techniques.
