Abstract

The truncated Gutemberg-Richter frequency-magnitude relationship in conjunction with a Poisson distribution is used to develop an asymptotic distribution of extreme values. This model is applied to estimate M_max and to estimate the probability of occurrence of earthquakes in Finland, using for earthquakes occurring throughout the period 1700-1979. The earthquake with the greatest magnitude within a ten-year period was used. The application of maximum likelihood procedure for the parameter estimation provides M_max=5.0±0.1.
